UNIT 9: PERFORMANCE PROJECT (THE CHRISTMAS PLAY)
This unit builds on developing my skills from the first year. Providing on opportunity for me to critically examine my own strengths of performing and production arts activities. We will be working on a collaborative piece of the work and will research relevant source materials to provided a comprehensive approach to the development of the piece. We will continually evaluate our work and will record the process in appropriate forms.
In Robs lesson everyone split into groups of 6 and 6, there was 4 groups. In those groups we had to come up with our own creative Christmas play. In Sharon's practical work we had to perform our ideas. My groups idea was about Mr and Mrs Claus, Mrs Claus use to love Christmas but stopped because children have started to be bad and getting spoilt, Mrs clause has brainwashed Mr Claus with this information. A group of kids tries to bring Christmas back.
The message we are trying to get out there with this piece is that it does not matter if your good or bad Christmas should be for everyone. We prepared a piece to the class where Mr and Mrs Claus get captured and they're questioned about the problems they've caused. The other groups also prepared there pieces based on their ideas.
We rehearsed our divided Christmas plays to show what our piece looks like. We then combined all pieces together to create one whole play and give it a good Christmas meaning.
We have been rehearsing our Christmas play and make improvements as we go along, in the beginning of the play is where the soldiers open the play, I decided to join as i don't do much and wanted to feel involved as much as i can. In the market scene where the children are meeting, me and Roman Norman decided to play a Victorian couple buying bananas, turkey and phones and also giving money to the poor. I also play the British Soldier at war.
We've been given a working script to work on for our Christmas play. As a team we worked through it straight away. Now we are working on bringing it to life, the script gave everyone ideas on how to make it better but following the scripts and not make it seam under cooked but bringing the script to life,
With Sharon we had to get into groups that we were in when we created a idea for our Christmas play, in our groups we has to come up with an improvisation for the last scene for the Christmas play. The scene needs to be based at a Toy shop. Everyone had to come up with a piece with how the script has describe the last scene to be. With everyone's improvisation we had to pick the best out of 3 and if not we combined the scenes.
The first groups scene is about - the kids are at gun point but they stand up to the evil one and they preach to him to change his view on Christmas, the guards turn on on the evil one too when they hear the kids speech, the evil one scares the kids with a button that makes a bomb when he clicks on it, the dog is the hero for he jumps on the evil one to stop him from pressing the button.
The second groups piece is about - the evil one and his acrylics - the evil one is dressed as Santa and the acylics are dressed as elves and they're holding presents.
In the parents escaping scene there is Me, Roman, Pedro, Tia, Madelina and Favour. Me, Roman, Pedro and Favour - we are the parents in this scene trying to escape. Tia and Madalina are the guards. Us parents have to escape - in this scene we talked about how we need to escape and how. So we had to create a distraction so Pedro can get hold of the key. I'm not very happy we how the scene is going because it's really under created and short. I was so stuck with what to do and how to build my character in order to improve the scene. My mind was moving very slow at this point - in general I struggle with using my brain to come up with good ideas in drama, something, if not I just count on my team mates for guidance but I really do wish I was able to give so much when it comes to being creative and giving ideas to being creative and giving ideas and so on - that is something I want to work on.
With Sharon we just went through the whole play in one go and it went smoothly but it but it still felt like more should be added. For example the market scene, me and Roman play a Victorian couple/ rich couple but we don't really do much - a back story was needed in our roles that we had to think about.
We finally had our final script completed and now we have a script to stick with. We went through it all in one go but its it was a bit under cooked - we are still going through it bringing it to life until its a success.
After months then weeks of rehearsing our "Questmas Play" the play ended up being a success and we got to enjoy our Christmas holiday knowing how the Christmas play ended up.
The journey wasn't easy of course, it wasn't easy working with people that don't come in sometimes but we were able to go through the rehearsals without those people - it wasn't easy but we got through it.
Rehearsals was a little under cooked sometimes but we got through that as a team with good results. It was different having a role where you don't really do much but it was important to still be in the scenes to make the scene a lot natural for ourselves and the audiences so they understand what they're watching. I learnt even when you don't have a big role it's still big because your in the scene - you can make one little mistake that may ruin the scene so even if you don't have a big role you still have a meaning. Working with a big group is actually really hard because people easily get distracted but they never underestimate the team work - everyone works together and its amazing.
There has been ups and downs during rehearsal time and outside rehearsal time but at the end everyone still keeps it serious in the rehearsal space.
We stuck to the script but improvised with it a little in what suits the characters.
Dress rehearsal is a crazy one, you have to run to go get changed in the changing rooms ready for the next scenes to come, some accidentally change into the wrong outfits and have to change again to the right outfits and during that some are making noise and every ones mind is all over the place because they're all nervous - it's crazy because there is a lot of us.
Its weird for me to experience this moment with such a big group because in my level 2 class my class was very small and it was quite easy compared to my class but it was a good challenge and i am happy with that.
Teamwork in performances and rehearsals is very important and i never forget that and lets not forget the production team - they're part of the team - they're what makes the performance happen just like every other performance you've seen production is important.
The journey in creating this play was interesting because we created this play all on our own - used our minds to create such an interesting play as a team for our audiences to watch. Then having to split into groups to create a scene to get an idea of the play and for our class mates to get a scene ideas for each other.
Creating the script to get things going so it can help us rehearse and improvise them so we can get ideas - we had story lines what the play was about but it was up to us to get it in paper and to bring it to life. Then rehearsing with the script then without the script. Dress rehearsal and a lot of props. It was a great challenge to go through and I think we did good when we got through and I think we did good when we got through it.
The creativity that went into this was really good 0 there is a lot of us so there was a lot of ideas being put into this and it made me admire everyone because i believe when creating a piece like this coming from our minds - peoples minds - students eyes to perform to everyone and them enjoying it made me believe creativity from the mind makes you special.
After months and weeks of rehearsing for the Christmas play the play was a success and we got to enjoy our Christmas holiday knowing how much of a success the Christmas play was.
