UNIT 10: PREPARING FOR PROGRESSION
"THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS"

This assignment will prepare me in looking at relevant progression routes within the preparing arts industries. It will enable me to prepare suitable material for both University and Drama School progression. I will also be able to prepare relevant audition material and perform these to an "Audition Panel".

We has a lesson with Sharon where we all had a monologue we all had to read word for word together then we had to read sentence for sentence together. Then we all had to explain what happened in the monologue, we also had to ask questions and state words that grabbed our attention that we don't know about.
We was working on this monologue because during the holidays my class was asked to find a monologue to go through in order to perform it. So I've found one monologue which I really liked and it was called "Dialogue of the Gods" and I played Hera.

DIALOGUES OF THE GODS

A monologue from the dialogues of Lucian

Adapted for the stage by Baudelaire Jones

HERA: You should be ashamed of yourself! Lord of the gods! Hah! Your behavior wouldn’t be proper even if you were some mortal peasant! You desert me, your lawful wife, and go carousing with mortal women at all hours of the day and night with no consideration for my feelings! It’s not respectable! At least those sluts of yours remained on Earth, while you’ve brought this youth from Ida into my own house! He actually lives with us! I have to pick up after him! Oh, I’ve seen how you take the cup from him! Everyone sees! It’s embarrassing! Even when you’re not thirsty! After tasting, you hand the cup back and insist that he drink too, then you receive it again, all googly-eyed, making sure to take the remainder from the spot where the boy has placed his lips so you can drink and kiss at the same time in front of us all! Do you really think we’re so dim-witted that we can’t see it?! And this morning, I actually witnessed you, the King and father of the universe, with that big beard you’ve grown, lay aside your aegis and thunderbolt to play a game of marbles with the boy! You’ll take any excuse to get close to him, and don’t think that I don’t see it! Zeus, King of the Gods—a pedophile and a degenerate!

Details about this monologue:
Zeus, Hera has a jealous fit and that transformed her. But that is not all, she has thought of  new punishment for the poor thing. She has put a coward in charge, who is all over eyes, this Argus, as he is called, postures and haifer, and never goes to sleep.
Hera's myth: Hera (Roman name: Juno), wife of Zeus and queen of the ancient Greek Gods, represented the ideal women and was goddess of marriage and the family. However, she was perhaps most famous for her jealous and vengeful nature, principally aimed against the lovers of her husband and their illegitimate off spring.
How is Hera dissipated: Hera was the Olympian queen of the gods, and the goddess of marriage, women, the sky and the stars of heaven. She was usually and holding a royal, lotus - tipped scarfire, and sometimes accompinied by a lion, cuckoo or hawk.

We all performed our monologues with Sharon. I performed my classical monologue. Hera's character seamed serious in this monologue and also angry and disgusted where my voice is not raised I am not screaming I just had to sound serious and angry and make my body and facial expressions the same way to give the message that I am very angry. Watching everyone perform their monologues helps me a lot when it comes to performing and performing a monologue, it impacts you and your skills in acting.
It was the day to perform our monologues, the whole class went to soho to perform their monologues - I was prepared to perform my monologue in front of the camera but I was also nervous because I did not want to mess it up.
The set up was amazing, standing in front of the camera actually made me happy, everything was 3D i could'nt see anything but the bright light in front of me. As I performed my monologue I was doing so well until i got stuck in words and decided to do the whole thing again. When I finished i walked up happy but disappointed with myself a little bit because i knew I could do better. Looking back at the video when it was posted on youtube I looked at myself performing and said I can do better, there is more where that came from I know it i just need to bring it out.

There is a few skill audits which identifies my strength and goals. I have my own development to meet those goals.
My strengths are, let's start with Movement - I am able to move on the stage, what this communicates to the audience and the affect this has upon the play, it also communicates characteristics. My goal in developing this skill is to use physical methods to help with characterisation for e.g moving, quickly, lightly or slowly. Another movement would be to use weight and space to communicate character, overall working in relation to the character more.
Body language is another skill that i am good at but also my goal to do better at it. My goal in developing this skill is using a lot more facial expressions, gestures and the relative positions of a speaker and listener - this will add layers of meaning to the spoken words.
Communicate with my character and other characters coming from my movement and position. I also communicate using my facial expressions. The means of connection between people, my goal in developing this skill - communication is very important in performing arts, what is sent on the stage gets an immediate response from the audience. Developing this i need to explore my character and other characters I am communication with and reflect on my statement, what comes to ming when you say this?
Gestures is my goal, its a skill for me but also a goal because I know I can do better.
Co-ordinating is one of my skills too I am able to organize my class mates - people and groups so that we can all work together. Important elements braid together when you are in stillness and that is one of my skills too.
Timing in performances refers to dramatic timing of movements and gestures ans that is a skill I carry with me everyday and to drama especially but when performing the use of our body must be carefully considered. I always keep control in drama its my skill and also my gain to have control, I begin with clear aims and objectives, routine, activities, sharing and feedback - those are my skills and more of a goal for me.
Eye contact is a skill of mine - it is an important communication tool and is important to help make your audience feel invalid in your performance.
Listening is one of the most important you can have and how well we do it can effect a variety of things our lives and that is my skill.
Expression of mood - the mood of a performance is closely linked with everyday feelings such as pity, anger, desire or illustration. This is something I carry with me along with my other skills, this is on of my skills and also my goal because I know I can do better.
Spatial awareness I always have a thought - out awareness of things in the space around me including the awareness of our body's position in the space. My goal in developing this skill is knowing my whereabouts very well without panicking and getting things wrong, I also need to know other characters where about's as well as mine, I need to be aware of the set and the props especially because you need to put it somewhere you know you will find it and it's ready for use.

PRO'S AND CONS OF GOING TO UNIVERSITY OR DRAMA SCHOOL:

PROS OF APPLYING TO/TRAINING IN DRAMA SCHOOLS
1) The most valuable degree in performing arts one can possibply get.
2) Great training for all types of performers particulary actors.
3) Opportunities to meet important industry people and create strong connections
4) Final year graduate showcases attract a lot of good talents agents.
5) Agents and casting directors value actors with done school training more

CON'S OF APPLYING TO/TRAINING IN DRAMA SCHOOL
1) Extremely busy class schedule and a lot of homework
2) No time to audition for acting jobs or work to support
3) No preperation on the business and marketing side of acting.
4) Very difficult to get accepted
5) Some additional training (acting classes) is still recommended after graduation

PROS OF APPLYING TO/TRAINING IN UNIVERSITY
1) The schedule is not very packed, not a lot of homework
2) Enough time audition for an occasional acting job and work part time
3) A chance to enjoy a real student life
4) Might be a good ( although not time - effective) introduction into an acting world
5) Much easier to get accepted

CON'S OF APPLYING TO/TRAINING IN UNIVERSITY
1) Poor acting training, both hands - on and theory
2) degrees are pretty much worthess within the industry
3) Little chance to connect with important industry people
4) Final year showcase are usually small and attract minimum attention
5) No preperation on the business and marketing side of acting
6) Some cost of training as drama schools
7) A significant amount of additional making is required after graduation

The key take away here is the drama school training is more valuable, but more difficult to achieve. University acting training is easier to get through, but is pretty much a total waste of time if you want to leverage your degree after graduation.
